Screen shot tools not working with app "UltraMon".

Some of my users have experience problems running the screen shot tool using this app. (

The behaviour is a little strange such as only capturing the task bar on the secondary monitor when selecting active window only. If you select to capture the full screen, then it will only capture the screen on the secondary monitor.

Everything works fine if Ultramon is not running. They use the ultramon for easily working with multiple monitors so if a fix was released it would be great.

Can you turn on screenshot debugging and email joel the result?

Instructions here:

Click on the envelope icon next to Joel's name (or send to me and I'll forward).

I run UltraMon with three monitors, and it works fine. Well, it does now.

I tracked it down to use of the "smart taskbar" feature of UltraMon. If you turn this off and go back to the standard WinXP idea of a single taskbar on a single monitor, everything works.

Using UltraMon's smart taskbars (where you have one per monitor) does NOT work. That causes the behaviour you're seeing.

Thanks Andrew!

I have some ideas for improving this in the next version. The trouble is that the screenshot tool can't really take the frontmost window, since that is the toolbar by the time you've clicked on the screenshot tool, so it tries to find the second window, and a lot of times, it finds little bits of floating things that float about on your screen and decides that they are the frontmost window.

Two suggestions come to mind to allow for the current window problem:

1) Allow the user the set a keyboard shortcut to take the snapshot
2) Add an icon to the window title bar. A little more complicated but it is an option. If you wanted to go a little further, you could Flag/Target a specific window as the screenshot default. People here have requested this feature as all cases originate from a single application most of the time (They do QC).

Would it be possible to allow the user to "scroll" through windows to capture?  If the tool grabs the second window, and that's not right, then the user could click a button to show the third window, then the fourth, etc, until the desired window was shown.

Here's an additional way.

When invoked, the tool would grab a screenshot of the entire screen, then iterate all visible windows recording their bounds.

Then present the screenshot and let use move mouse around. When the mouse is inside a region, highlight it and allow the user to click to select whatever is inside that region.
